Essay Topic: Losing Sight of One’s Own Humanity

The Holocaust was a time when people lost sight of their own humanity.

Respond to the following quote:

"It happened in 1941, 1942, 1943 and 1944 in the very heart of Europe, one of the oldest civilizations in the world that had been shaped by centuries of Christian religious thinking and by the Enlightenment - yet human beings had stopped recognizing their own fellows! Human beings had not seen that by killing others, they were killing themselves."
-- Father Patrick Desbois, "The Holocaust by Bullets" 2008

Since 2004, Father Patrick Desbois, a French priest, has traveled to the Ukraine, and interviewed hundreds of witnesses of the mass killing of the Jews in Ukraine and Belarus between 1941 and 1944. Through this work, Father Desbois has identified the sites of mass graves of murdered Jews and provided proper burials for these forgotten victims.
