The Lost Cellos is the story of Lev Aronson, the world-renowned cellist, Holocaust survivor and teacher, whose prized Amati cello was confiscated in Riga in 1941. Aronson was born in Germany, raised in Russia and Latvia, and educated in Berlin. His deep connection to the cello helped him preserve his sanity and identity while in the camps. After the war, he immigrated to the United States and became principal cellist with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.
Frances Brent explores the fate of Lev Aronson and the instruments that passed through his hands in an attempt to understand what was lost and what was saved during the Holocaust.
Frances Brent’s other work includes the 2005 May Swenson Award-Winning book of poems, The Beautiful Lesson of the I. Her work has appeared in the New Yorker, the Yale Review, the Denver Quarterly, New American Writing, and she was the co-translator of Beyond the Limit: Poems by Irina Ratushinskaya.
