Every family has its secrets, though few of them have the power to transform lives and fill in crucial gaps in world history. When Sala Kirschner revealed the secrets of her wartime letters, the Holocaust survivor could never have predicted the far-reaching consequences. Now, nearly 18 years later, Ann Kirschner, Sala’s daughter and author of Sala’s Gift, will talk about the powerful aftershocks of that decision. For those who thought they knew everything about this most shocking era in world history, Sala’s Gift and the traveling exhibition at the JCCSF light a path to new understanding.
Letters to Sala is a treasure trove of documents saved by one young woman during her five year ordeal of internment. This exhibition, presented in high quality facsimile, provides a remarkable first-hand view of the human drama that unfolded among Jewish victims forced to work as slave laborers. Letters to Sala will be on display at the JCCSF from November 2009 - February 2010.
The exhibition is curated by Jill Vexler, and is on loan from the New York Public Library and the French Children of the Holocaust Foundation
This event is free.
