The People v. Leo Frank
Film Screening and Discussion

Tuesday, October 13, 2009
6:00pm - reception; 6:30pm - film screening
Jewish Community Center San Francisco
3200 California Street, San Francisco

Almost a century after the fact, one of the most notorious criminal cases in American history comes back to life in a new feature documentary, The People vs. Leo Frank. The 1913 murder of 13 year old Mary Phagan in an Atlanta pencil factory, and the subsequent trial and lynching of her accused Jewish killer, Leo Frank, brought anti-Semitism, class tensions, and racism to the forefront of the nation's attention. This case played a large role in launching the Anti-Defamation League and was a flashpoint for the resurgence of the new Ku Klux Klan.

Following the screening, Emmy award-winning filmmaker Ben Loeterman moderates a discussion with Jonathan Bernstein (ADL), Rev. Bruce Bramlett (Silicon Valley Faces), and Eva Paterson (Equal Justice Society) on what it means to be "the other" and why the seemingly outlandish social forces at work in the Frank case are disturbingly familiar.

This event is free.
