Holocaust Center of Northern California Fall Film and Lecture Series
Kristallnacht Commemorative Program: Shanghai, A Refuge for the Stateless
Monday, November 9, 2009
6:30 pm
Holocaust Center of Northern California
121 Steuart Street, San Francisco
The November pogrom known as Kristallnacht marked a pivotal point in the history of the Holocaust as Nazi policies shifted from hate-speech and the destruction of civil liberties, to acts of violence and the destruction of homes, business, and families. The Jews of Germany were no longer safe in their home country and had limited options. However Shanghai, a place that did not require visas, provided safety for thousands of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution.
Join us for a panel discussion to learn more about life in Shanghai during this tumultuous period. The panel will include Shanghai survivor, Rabbi Ted Alexander and Vice Consul of the US in Shanghai from 1946-1949, Mr. John H. Stutesman, in conversation with HCNC Director of Community Outreach Rachel Isquith.
Co-sponsored by Congregation B’nai Emunah
This event is free.
