From the Auschwitz Chronicle is an elegantly wrought documentary about the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Oświęcim, Poland. Narrated by Miriam Margolyes and Kenneth Branagh, the film is based on prisoners’ stories of daily life in the camp. Director Michal Bukojemski expertly incorporates testimonies of inmates with drawings, images and photographs of the people whose words we hear. Divided into five parts, the film presents searing testimonies about roll calls, the orchestra, the platform in Birkenau, love, and the Sondercommando. What results is a deeply thoughtful and elegiac film that tiptoes into one’s conscience with the quietest yet surest of steps.
